Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye, is a strong alkali used in cold-process and hot-process soapmaking. The required amount of NaOH must be calculated based on the specific oils and fats in a recipe using their individual NaOH SAP values and the desired superfat. Do not use a generic percentage as a substitute for a lye calculation.

WARNING: Sodium hydroxide is highly caustic and can cause severe burns. Always wear appropriate protective equipment and follow safe lye-handling procedures. Add sodium hydroxide to water. Never add  water to sodium hydroxide. Keep away from children and pets.
