Apricot Kernel Oil, derived from the seeds of Prunus armeniaca, is an emollient widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations for its excellent skin compatibility and conditioning properties.
This oil is rich in oleic acid (C18:1, ~60–70%) and linoleic acid (C18:2, ~20–30%), two essential fatty acids shown in dermatological studies to support skin barrier repair, reduce trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), and improve hydration. Its fatty acid profile makes it highly compatible with human skin lipids, allowing for fast absorption without leaving a greasy residue.
Phytosterols, present in apricot kernel oil, have been demonstrated in clinical and in vitro studies to reduce inflammation, enhance skin barrier function, and improve moisturization. These compounds help maintain skin homeostasis and soothe compromised or dry skin.
Additionally, apricot kernel oil contains tocopherols (Vitamin E compounds), which function as antioxidants, protecting skin lipids from oxidative damage and supporting the stability of formulations.
Key Scientific Benefits:
• Barrier repair: Rich in linoleic acid, which supports ceramide synthesis and reduces TEWL
• Antioxidant support: Natural tocopherols help prevent lipid peroxidation
• Dermal compatibility: Non-comedogenic and suitable for sensitive skin
• Formulation benefits: Excellent spreadability, enhances texture in emulsions and anhydrous products
INCI: Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil
Usage Range: 1–100%
Comedogenic Rating: 2 (generally safe for most skin types)
Validated by dermatological literature and widely used in evidence-based skincare formulations, Apricot Kernel Oil is a reliable, effective ingredient for moisturizers, serums, cleansers, and body care products.
